Costco finds: Why my membership still pays off (yes, even on a weekend)

A large store with many shelves and a cart

Updated April 2025.

I swung by the Costco on Damen the other morning and, wow—weekend madness was in full swing. Still, I left with a trunk full of deals. Here are my top 14 Costco finds that prove my membership is still totally worth it.

Cheaper gasoline

I have the credit card, and get 5% back on gas (it’s always cheaper than nearby options, too), 4% back on other eligible gas and electric vehicle charging, 3% back on restaurants and eligible travel, and 2% back on all other Costco and purchases.

Electronics & tech

The Costco tour always begins in electronics. I’ve picked up printer cartridges, flash drives, and external hard drives here at solid discounts. Also check out the Apple products and subscription deals, Ring doorbells, and more.

Plants & greenery

Yes, Costco has houseplants—and they’re shockingly affordable. I’ve seen a 12′ palm tree for $30, a bonsai for $13 (clearance). If only I had a car big enough to get it all home…

Office supplies

The office aisle is perfect for stocking up on ink cartridges, paper, envelopes, and markers. It saves me from constant re-ups at the office supply store.

Bedding & pillows

Two king-size pillows for $12? Yes, please. They’re surprisingly good quality—better than the overpriced ones I’ve picked up at Macy’s.

Alcohol

Costco’s wine, beer, and spirits selection is elite. Great for housewarming gifts or party stock-ups, often at prices that rival Trader Joe’s. Their Kirkland Signature brand wines are surprisingly solid, too.

Bakery goodies

24 mini sandwich rolls for $2.59? Most go in the freezer, the few left are eaten that week. Muffins, cakes, and pies are freezer-friendly and party-ready. Don’t knock their sheet cakes—they’re crowd-pleasers and a steal.

Meats & prepared foods

Buying in bulk isn’t always easy for a single household, but it’s perfect if you share with friends. Bonus: Mike Ditka pork burgers. Enough said.

Grab-n-go meals like stuffed tilapia, taco kits with all the fixings, and salads make dinner much easier.

Produce

Fruits can be tricky if you’re not planning to eat them fast. But deals like $1.50 for 3 lbs. of bananas make it worth it—just freeze what you won’t eat for smoothies or banana bread. I also love the berries.

Cleaning supplies

Costco’s generic cleaning brands hold their own against name brands. A 6-month supply of laundry detergent? Sign me up.

Their kitty litter is also a great deal; just be sure you can lift it—consider it a bonus workout.

Frozen foods

Danger zone. I’ve convinced myself I need 5 lbs. of cooked shrimp more than once. Prices are lower than local grocers, but make sure you can actually eat everything before freezer burn hits.

Deals worth noting:

  • Butter, Greek yogurt, and eggs (if they’re in stock)
  • Naked juice
  • Eli’s Cheesecakes (just trust me)
  • Frozen fruit for smoothies

Clothing & basics

Skip the high-end department stores and check out:

  • Lucky Brand jeans (~$40)
  • Calvin Klein underwear & socks
  • Maidenform bras
  • Adidas and Puma sneakers

Even if Gloria Vanderbilt isn’t your thing, you’ll find basics at unbeatable prices.

Pantry picks

Some cereals are cheaper at Jewel, but bulk items like whole bean coffee or a huge jar of natural almond butter, are solid buys (I believe this is still under $7). Gift card bundles (e.g. $75 for $100 at Fleming’s) are perfect for holiday gifts or date nights.

Beauty & vitamins

High-end skincare brands like Elizabeth Arden and Borghese make surprise appearances, and K beauty is showing up as well. But I usually stick to Cetaphil, which comes in jumbo sizes at excellent prices.

I saved $60 on vitamins by bringing a list of my daily dosages and comparing brands in-store, and paying attention to their regular sales flyers. Highly recommend doing the same.

Know before you go

  • Accepted payments: Visa, debit card, cash, or check. No Mastercard or AmEx.
  • Avoid weekends: It’s a zoo on the weekend. Weekdays sometimes feel a little overwhelming too but they’re still a better bet.
  • Don’t lose your receipt: They’ll check it at the door on your way out.

Costco isn’t just a warehouse—it’s an experience. With the right strategy (and freezer space), your membership will pay for itself in no time.
